Circular Reuse in Government: DJI’s Sustainable Furniture System
15 October 2025
Case study, Furniture
The Dutch Custodial Institutions Agency transformed its furniture procurement by shifting from a buy-and-dispose mindset to one centred on reuse and refurbishment. Through a centralised inventory system, existing furniture is now tracked, repaired, and redistributed across the organisation before any new purchase is considered. This shift redefines value: from owning new products to extending the life of existing ones, thus resulting in major savings, reduced waste, and strong social impact through the involvement of detainees in refurbishment work. What began as a small-scale experiment is now a national model, proving that circular procurement in government can combine sustainability, efficiency, and inclusion.
