Alternative fuels and emission classifications in waste transportations

15 October 2025 Case study, Others

Helsinki Region Environmental Services (HSY) has transformed waste transportation by embedding low-emission standards and alternative fuels into its procurement processes. What began as a pilot requiring biodiesel use in selected vehicles has evolved into a region-wide policy mandating renewable fuels and compliance with the EU’s Euro 6 emission classification. By setting strict yet achievable standards and allowing market time to adapt, HSY demonstrated how municipalities can lead the transition toward cleaner, more circular logistics while maintaining stable costs and improving air quality.
